SharePoint Lookup Column Threshold Limit
Did you know that there is a limit to the number of lookup columns that can be added to a view on a SharePoint list or library?
In a recent incident, a client encountered an issue when adding several calculated columns to a list that already had numerous Lookup and People columns. After the new columns were added, they were presented with the error below.
To manage performance, Microsoft limits us to 12 lookup columns on a single view. Lookup columns require additional processing as they reference data in other SharePoint lists and data sources.

These include:
- Lookup Column
- People Picker (including Created By and Modified by columns)
- File Type
- Managed Metadata Column
To avoid the lookup threshold error, ensure your views always have less than 12 lookup column types.
Actionable Tips for Better SharePoint List Management
- Plan Your Columns: Before adding columns, plan and prioritize which metadata and lookup columns are essential for your views.
- Use Indexed Columns: Index columns that you frequently use in filters and sorting to improve performance.
- Optimise Views: Create multiple views with different sets of columns to avoid hitting the lookup column threshold.
- Monitor List Size: Keep an eye on the number of items in your list and consider archiving old items to stay within the list view threshold.
